Accountant

The short version: An accountant handles the numbers so you don’t have to. They file your tax return, help you claim expenses, and make sure you’re not paying more tax than you should.

Do I actually need one?

If you’re employed and your tax is sorted through PAYE, probably not. Your employer handles it.

But if you’re self employed, a freelancer, a landlord, or you’ve got any income that isn’t taxed at source, an accountant can save you time, stress, and often money too.

What can they do for you?

Prepare and file your Self Assessment tax return. Help you understand what expenses you can claim. Spot tax reliefs you might be missing. Keep you compliant with HMRC. Answer your questions without you having to trawl through gov.uk.

How do I know if they’re legit?

Check they’re qualified. Look for AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) as a minimum, or chartered status like ACCA, ICAEW, or CIMA. And read the reviews. If they’ve got hundreds of happy clients, that’s a good sign.
