The short version: The Blind Person’s Allowance gives you an extra £3,070 of tax free income on top of your Personal Allowance. You need to be registered blind or severely sight impaired to claim it.
Who qualifies?
In England and Wales, you need to be on your local council’s register as blind or severely sight impaired (SSI). In Scotland and Northern Ireland, a medical certificate is enough.
Can you transfer it?
Yes. If you don’t use all of your allowance (because your income is lower than your total allowances), you can transfer the unused bit to your spouse or civil partner.
How do you claim?
Call HMRC on 0300 200 3301. It’s not automatic, so you need to actively request it.
How much does it save?
At the basic rate, £3,070 of extra allowance saves you £614 a year. More if you’re a higher rate taxpayer.
