The short version: Form 64-8 is what you sign to let an accountant or tax agent deal with HMRC on your behalf. Without it, HMRC won’t talk to them about your affairs, no matter how nicely they ask.
Why do you need it?
HMRC takes data protection seriously. They won’t discuss your tax situation with anyone unless you’ve formally authorised them. Form 64-8 gives that authorisation. It lets your accountant access your records, ask questions, and submit returns for you.
What does it cover?
You can authorise an agent for different taxes separately. Self Assessment, VAT, PAYE, Corporation Tax. The form lets you specify exactly what they can and can’t handle.
How do you fill it in?
It’s straightforward. Your details, your agent’s details, which taxes you’re authorising them for, and your signature. Your accountant will usually send you one to sign when you start working with them.
Can you cancel it?
Yes. If you change accountants or want to handle things yourself, you can remove the authorisation. Your new accountant will usually handle this as part of taking you on.
