HMRC

The short version: HMRC stands for His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. They’re the government department that collects taxes, enforces tax laws, and pays out things like tax credits and Child Benefit.

What do they do?

Collect Income Tax, National Insurance, VAT, Corporation Tax, Stamp Duty, and pretty much every other tax. They also enforce minimum wage rules, tackle tax evasion, and administer various benefit payments.

How do you pay them?

If you’re employed, your employer handles it through PAYE. If you’re self employed or have other untaxed income, you file a Self Assessment tax return and pay what you owe by the deadline. Miss it and HMRC will charge penalties and interest.

What if you need to contact them?

HMRC has online services for most things. You can check your tax, make payments, update your details, and file returns through your Government Gateway account. Phone lines exist but can involve long waits.

Scotland and Wales

Scotland has Revenue Scotland for some taxes, and Wales has the Welsh Revenue Authority. But for most people, HMRC is still the main point of contact.
