Maternity Allowance

The short version: Maternity Allowance is a benefit for pregnant women and new mothers who can’t get Statutory Maternity Pay. If you’re self employed, recently stopped working, or don’t qualify for SMP through your employer, this might be for you.

Who can claim?

You might be eligible if you’re employed but don’t qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay, you’re self employed, you’ve recently stopped working, or you do unpaid work for your spouse’s business. You need to have been employed or self employed for at least 26 weeks in the 66 weeks before your due date.

How much do you get?

The amount depends on your earnings. There’s a maximum weekly rate, and you might get 90% of your average earnings if that’s lower. Self employed people’s entitlement depends on how much Class 2 National Insurance they’ve paid. Check gov.uk for current rates.

How long does it last?

Up to 39 weeks. You can start claiming from 11 weeks before your due date, or earlier if the baby arrives early.

Is it taxable?

Yes. Maternity Allowance counts as taxable income, though tax isn’t deducted at source.
