Side Gig

The short version: A side gig is work you do alongside your main job. Driving for Uber, freelance writing, selling on Etsy. It’s extra income, and yes, it’s taxable.

Do you need to tell HMRC?

If you earn above the trading allowance from your side gig, you need to register for Self Assessment and file a tax return. Your main job is taxed through PAYE, but side income needs to be declared separately.

What about expenses?

You can deduct genuine business costs just like any self employed person. Supplies, equipment, travel, a proportion of phone and internet if you use them for the gig.

Does your employer need to know?

Check your employment contract. Some employers have restrictions on outside work, especially if it competes with their business. The tax side is separate from any contractual obligations to your employer.
