Bereavement Allowance

The short version: Bereavement Support Payment is money from the government if your spouse or civil partner has died. You can claim a lump sum plus monthly payments for up to 18 months.

How much can you get?

If you’re getting Child Benefit (or eligible for it), you receive £3,500 upfront plus £350 a month. If not, it’s £2,500 upfront plus £100 a month.

Who can claim?

You need to be under State Pension age. Your spouse or civil partner must have paid enough National Insurance. You can’t be in a new relationship. And you need to claim within 21 months of the death, ideally within three months to get the full amount.

Is it taxable?

Yes, it counts as taxable income. If you file a Self Assessment, include it in your return.
