The short version: HCPC stands for Health and Care Professions Council. If you work in certain healthcare roles, you’re legally required to register with them and renew that registration regularly to keep practising.
Who needs to register?
The list includes paramedics, radiographers, dieticians, clinical psychologists, social workers, and many other healthcare professionals. If your profession is regulated by the HCPC, you can’t legally work without being on their register.
What do they regulate?
They set standards for training, conduct, and professional behaviour. They also make sure anyone who trained outside the UK meets the same standards before practising here.
How much does renewal cost?
There’s a fee for each two year registration period. New graduates from approved courses pay a reduced rate for their first two years. Check the HCPC website for current fees as they do change.
Can you claim the fee as an expense?
If you’re self employed or a locum, yes. Professional registration fees are an allowable business expense. You can deduct them from your profits when calculating your tax.
