The short version: Your HMRC CIS login gives you access to your Construction Industry Scheme account online. If you’re a contractor or subcontractor in construction, you’ll need it to manage tax deductions and check your records.
What do you need before you can log in?
First, you need to be registered for CIS. That requires your business name, Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), VAT number if you’re registered, and the date you started trading. Once registered, you can access CIS through your Government Gateway account.
What can you do once logged in?
Contractors can verify subcontractors, submit monthly returns, and check what deductions they’ve made. Subcontractors can check what’s been deducted from their pay and make sure everything’s been reported correctly.
Why does it matter?
The deductions contractors make count towards your tax bill. If the records are wrong, you could end up paying too much or too little. Checking your CIS account regularly helps you spot problems before they become expensive.
At the end of the tax year, you’ll use this information when filing your Self Assessment to claim back any overpayments.
