HMRC Online Services

The short version: HMRC Online Services is where you manage your tax affairs digitally. File returns, check your tax, make payments, update your details. Most of what you need to do with HMRC can be done here.

How do you access it?

Through your Government Gateway account. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to set it up and verify your identity. Once you’re in, you can link different services like Self Assessment, PAYE, VAT, and more.

What can you do online?

File your Self Assessment tax return, check how much tax you owe, make payments, see your PAYE records, register as self employed, check your National Insurance record, and update HMRC when your circumstances change.

What about the Personal Tax Account?

This is part of HMRC Online Services. It shows your tax code, estimated tax, employment history, and pension information all in one place. Useful for keeping track of where you stand.

Is it reliable?

Mostly, though it can be slow during busy periods (especially around Self Assessment deadlines). Don’t leave things to the last minute if you can help it.
