The short version: A P800 is a letter from HMRC telling you that you’ve paid the wrong amount of tax. Good news: you might be due a refund. Bad news: you might owe more.
Why would you get one?
Common reasons include being on the wrong tax code, having multiple jobs, starting or leaving a job mid year, receiving taxable benefits, or having untaxed income that wasn’t accounted for properly.
What happens if you overpaid?
HMRC will tell you how much you’re owed and how to claim it. Usually you can get it paid directly to your bank account through their online service, or they’ll send a cheque.
What if you underpaid?
HMRC will explain how much you owe and how to pay. They might collect it by adjusting your tax code for the next year, spreading the extra amount over your future pay packets.
Should you check it?
Yes. HMRC’s calculations are usually right, but mistakes happen. Check the figures against your own records. If something looks wrong, contact HMRC or get advice.
