The short version: Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is the tax you pay when buying property in England or Northern Ireland. The amount depends on the purchase price and whether it’s your main home or an additional property.
How much do you pay?
There are different rate bands. First time buyers and main residence purchases have more generous thresholds than additional properties. Second homes and buy to lets attract a surcharge on top of standard rates. Check gov.uk for current bands as they change.
When do you pay?
Within 14 days of completion. Your solicitor usually handles the payment and filing as part of the conveyancing process.
